Marlins skipper Redmond suffers Achilles injury

Dec 9, 2014 - 10:20 PM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond is attending MLB's Winter Meetings in southern California, but he's doing so at far less than 100 percent health.

On Tuesday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel first reported that Redmond suffered an injury to his right Achilles tendon during a doubles tennis match. He told the paper that the tendon "just popped" and that surgery is scheduled for this Friday.

Redmond had his contract extended through the 2017 season in late September after guiding the Marlins to a 15-win improvement from the 2013 season and the team's first winning home record since 2010.

Under Redmond's leadership, Miami became just one of three National League teams since 1969 to win 77 or more games following a 100-loss season, joining the 1986 San Francisco Giants and the 2005 Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 43-year-old was named manager prior to the 2013 season, taking over for Ozzie Guillen. He has compiled a 139-185 record as the Marlins' skipper.
