White Sox sign Melky Cabrera
Dec 16, 2014 - 4:40 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago White Sox and outfielder Melky Cabrera made it official on Tuesday, agreeing to a three-year, $42 million contract.Cabrera spent the past two seasons with Toronto. He hit .279 with three homers and 30 RBI in 88 games with the Blue Jays in 2013, then followed with a strong 2014 campaign in which he batted .301 with 16 homers, 35 doubles and 73 RBI in 139 games.
"Melky provides us with a professional hitter, who reaches base on a consistent basis," said White Sox general manager Rick Hahn in a statement Tuesday. "We think he slides into (the) batting order perfectly and adds depth to a very versatile lineup. We are very excited about his addition to our roster."
The 30-year-old Dominican native played his first five seasons with the New York Yankees, winning a World Series title in 2009, then spent 2010 with Atlanta, 2011 with Kansas City and 2012 with the San Francisco Giants.
Cabrera was the All-Star Game MVP in 2012 and posted a .346 average with 11 homers and 60 RBI in 113 games with the Giants until he was suspended 50 games for a violation of baseball's drug policy.
In 1,211 big league games over 10 seasons, Cabrera owns a .286 batting average with 88 homers, 236 doubles and 520 RBI.
