Chris Young inks one-year deal with Royals

Mar 7, 2015 - 8:41 PM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals have added another experienced arm to their starting rotation mix, signing veteran Chris Young to a one-year contract Saturday.

Young joins the defending American League champions off a tremendous bounce- back season with the Seattle Mariners, in which the 35-year-old matched a career high with 12 wins and posted a 3.65 ERA over 29 starts and one relief appearance.

The 6-foot-10 right-hander, who did not pitch in the majors in 2013, was named the AL's Comeback Player of the Year by the Sporting News for his performance.

Young owns a 65-52 overall record with a 3.77 ERA in 10 major league seasons with Texas, San Diego, the New York Mets and Seattle. He was named an NL All- Star with the Padres in 2007.

The Royals were seeking some additional rotation depth with free-agent acquisition Kris Medlen not expected to be ready until around midseason.

Medlen, recovering from Tommy John surgery, was placed on the 60-day disabled list to make room for Young on the 40-man roster.
