Red Sox pin hopes on Porcello
Apr 19, 2015 - 2:32 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Rick Porcello tries to string back-to-back wins together on Sunday when the Boston Red Sox play the third test of a four-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. After losing his Boston debut, Porcello won his first start at Fenway on Monday, as he held the Washington Nationals to four runs and four hits in eight innings. He also struck out six and lowered his ERA to 3.86.
Porcello has faced Baltimore nine times and is 3-5 with a 4.28 ERA.
Baltimore, meanwhile, will counter with righty Miguel Gonzalez, who is also coming in off of his first win. Gonzalez struck out 10 New York Yankees on Tuesday, while holding them a run and four hits over seven frames.
In eight games (6 starts) against the Red Sox, Gonzalez is 4-1 with a 2.51 ERA. Last year, he allowed only one earned run in 14 1/3 innings in Boston.
Baltimore evened this series on Saturday, as Chris Tillman's 5 1/3 effective innings and a two-run homer from Chris Davis got the Orioles back in the win column with a 4-1 decision .
Tillman (2-1) rebounded from a rough previous start to hold the Red Sox to one run while striking out five, while Davis gave his team some needed breathing room by capping Baltimore's 13-hit day with a blast over the Green Monster in the ninth inning.
Adam Jones continued his hot start to the season by going 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Orioles. Davis finished with two hits and Caleb Joseph delivered an RBI single to help Baltimore bounce back from a 3-2 loss in Friday's opener.
David Ortiz and Brock Holt each had three hits for Boston, but the Red Sox were hurt by an 0-for-9 performance with runners in scoring position.
Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz (1-2) battled through six innings, yielding 11 hits but just two runs and registering seven strikeouts.
"(Buchholz) kept the game in check," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "They are aggressive, they swung the bat early in the count, but he did a good job of minimizing the damages."
The Orioles were 11-8 against Boston last season.
