Descalso lifts Rockies over Padres
Apr 23, 2015 - 5:30 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Daniel Descalso's pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Colorado Rockies to a 5-4 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.Nolan Arenado singled to begin the ninth off Shawn Kelley (0-2) and raced over to third two batters later on Michael McKenry's base hit to center. Kelley walked DJ LaMahieu to load the bases prior to Descalso poking a single over the head of left fielder Justin Upton for the winner.
"You know they have a five-man infield, trying to get a ground ball. For me, I was trying to get a ball up, over the plate so I could drive it to the outfield," Descalso said.
Adam Ottavino (1-0) grabbed the win for tossing a scoreless ninth to help the Rockies snap their five-game losing streak.
Corey Dickerson homered twice in the win, while Arenado and LaMahieu each knocked in a run.
Yangervis Solarte and Wil Myers went deep for San Diego, which had won three straight.
Solarte homered with one gone in the first to open the scoring, then Dickerson launched a solo shot into center field in the home first prior Arenado's two- bagger that scored Justin Morneau for a 2-1 lead.
Colorado continued to cash in on Padres starter James Shields in the second with back-to-back doubles to begin the inning. McKenry sent a double into left and easily scored on LaMahieu's RBI knock.
Myers brought San Diego within one with a solo homer in the sixth, then the visitors took the lead in the seventh off Rockies starter Kyle Kendrick.
Yonder Alonso singled with one out and crossed home on Derek Norris' double that tied the game. Pinch-hitter Cory Spangenberg sent a double into left that plated Norris for a 4-3 lead.
"You know Myers hit a big homer, Spangenberg with a big hit, we were in position to win," Padres manager Bud Black said.
Kendrick, who allowed 14 runs over his last two starts, was charged with four runs on seven hits over seven frames in the no-decision.
Joaquin Benoit could not hold the lead in the eighth when he served up Dickerson's second home run of the evening that knotted the score.
Game Notes
Shields went six innings and allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts ... McKenry stole his second base of the season in the win ... Finale of four-game series is Thursday afternoon as San Diego's Tyson Ross will oppose Jordan Lyles.
