Hudson, De La Rosa both try to bounce back in Colorado
Apr 25, 2015 - 12:28 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Tim Hudson takes another shot at win No. 1 on Saturday when the San Francisco Giants resume a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.Hudson fell to 0-2 on the season Sunday against Arizona, as he allowed five runs and six hits in five innings to raise his ERA nearly two runs to 3.93.
However, he retired seven of the final eight Arizona hitters he faced.
"Right now, all we're trying to do is find a way to go out there and play good baseball," Hudson said. "We can pitch better, we can field better and we can hit better. You do those things better, you're going to be better."
Hudson is 5-3 lifetime versus the Rockies with a 4.29 ERA in 16 games.
Colorado, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Jorge De La Rosa, who was awful in his season debut on Monday. De La Rosa was hammered by the San Diego Padres to the tune of nine runs (7 earned) and nine hits in just two innings.
"The thing that stood out for me was that the ball was elevated more than what we've seen from him over the years," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Some balls were up out over the plate, which is non-De La Rosa-like. And our guys took advantage of it, plain and simple."
De La Rosa, who opened the season on the disabled list with a left groin strain, has faced the Giants 24 times (21 starts) and is 9-6 against them with a 4.07 ERA.
San Francisco saw a three-game winning streak come to an end on Friday, as pinch-hitter Rafael Ynoa drove in the go- ahead run in the sixth inning and Colorado eked out a 6-4 victory. Charlie Blackmon homered and DJ LeMahieu had three hits for the Rockies, who are 4-0 this season against the defending World Series champions.
Eddie Butler (2-1) scattered nine hits and allowed four runs over six innings in Colorado's third consecutive win.
"I feel if our starters can do that, our bullpen is pretty good," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "I feel confident if we hand the ball to them at that point in the game, we're in good shape."
Chris Heston (2-2) was pounded for 11 hits and six runs over 5 1/3 frames for the Giants, who were coming off a three-game sweep of the Dodgers.
"I left pitches up there. I have to work both sides of the plate," Heston said.
Brandon Belt had three hits and an RBI, and Justin Maxwell hit a two-run homer in defeat.
The Rockies swept a three-game series by the bay from April 13-15.
