With Hamilton rumors swirling, Wilson takes hill vs. Rangers
Apr 25, 2015 - 12:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - While rumors of Josh Hamilton being moved back to Texas persist, C.J. Wilson tries to halt a personal two-game losing streak on Saturday when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continue their three-game series with the Rangers at Angel Stadium.Wilson tossed eight scoreless innings to win his initial outing, but has lost his last two. His most recent setback came last Saturday in Houston, as he allowed two runs and three hits in 6 2/3 innings, but walked four batters.
He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning of that one and left trailing, 1-0. It was a far better showing than his previous effort which saw him surrender seven runs (6 earned) in 5 2/3 innings to Kansas City.
"Sometimes you pitch well and somebody pitches a little bit better," Wilson said.
Wilson, who pitched the first seven seasons of his career with the Rangers, is 1-2 against his former team with a 7.36 ERA in eight starts.
Texas, meanwhile, will turn to righty Colby Lewis, who is 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA. Lewis absorbed the loss on Saturday in Seattle, as he allowed three runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Lewis has faced the Angels 19 times (17 starts) and is 5-8 against them with a 5.64 ERA.
Los Angeles eked out a win in Friday's opener, as David Freese belted the go- ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning and finished the game with a sparkling defensive play to boost the Angels to a 3-2 victory.
Garrett Richards (1-1) gave up three hits and a pair of runs over seven innings. Richards, who walked three and had five strikeouts, moved to 7-1 lifetime against the Rangers.
"I felt like I was back doing last year," Richards said. "Everything felt normal. I'm getting my timing and rhythm back. I'm pleased with where I'm at right now."
Huston Street escaped a jam in the ninth for his sixth save.
Before the game began, reports surfaced that the Angels were ready to trade the troubled Hamilton back to the Rangers. The Angels are reportedly going to pay about $65 million of the $83 million that is owed to the former AL MVP through the 2017 season.
Wandy Rodriguez yielded five hits and a run over five innings in the start for the Rangers. Keone Kela (0-1) gave up the homer to Freese and suffered his first career loss.
"Kela threw good pitches to Freese. He left a pitch over the plate, not where he wanted it to be, and Freese put a good swing on it," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said.
Prince Fielder had two of Texas' three hits, as the Rangers lost for the fourth time in five games.
Texas lost two of three games to the Angels in Arlington from April 13-15. The Angels have won 15 of the last 19 meetings between the AL West foes.
