Ozuna's double leads Marlins over Phillies
May 2, 2015 - 4:09 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcell Ozuna entered Friday's game with a .322 career average against the Phillies, and he continued to torment them in the Miami Marlins' 4-3 win.Ozuna went 4-for-4 with three doubles, including a game-winning two-base hit that scored Giancarlo Stanton in the ninth inning.
"Big night for O," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond.
Dee Gordon contributed three of Miami's 14 hits and stole his ninth base of the season. Starter Tom Koehler struck out six and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in five innings, with Steve Cishek (1-1) credited with a win for pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.
All three Philadelphia runs came on Chase Utley's third homer of the season, and the Phillies finished with just five hits. Jerome Williams started and allowed three runs in five innings, and the loss went to Ken Giles (1-1) for allowing Ozuna's deciding double in one-plus innings.
"It was good to see it early with the hits then Chase popping one out of the ball park," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "But we weren't able to add on."
Giles struck out Martin Prado to get out of two-out trouble in the eighth, and the Phillies sent him out for a second inning after they could not score in their half of the ninth despite Cody Asche's two-out triple.
He started the inning by walking Stanton when he did not get the call on a 3-2 slider. He threw three straight sliders to Ozuna, who ripped the last into the left-center field gap. Stanton raced around the bases and the relay throw from Freddy Galvis was wide of the plate, with Carlos Ruiz lunging at the sliding Stanton but unable to tag him in time.
After a brief video review, the call on the field was upheld.
Miami struck first in the second inning. After Ozuna led off the frame with a double, he moved up to third on Michael Morse's groundout and scored on J.T. Realmuto's sacrifice fly.
Koehler was perfect his first trip through the lineup but ran into problems in the fourth. After back-to-back singles by Ben Revere and Odubel Herrera, Utley homered to right field to put the Phillies up 3-1.
The trouble continued from there for Koehler. He walked Ryan Howard and Grady Sizemore hit a single to right field. He struck out Asche, but Ruiz walked to load the bases. Koehler got out of trouble, however, by striking out Galvis and tagging out Howard trying to score on a wild pitch.
After getting out of that jam, Miami pitchers retired 15-of-16 Phillies batters before Asche's triple in the ninth.
Meanwhile, the Marlins had plenty of run-scoring chances. They tied the game in the fifth on RBI hits by Prado and Stanton, but with the bases later loaded, Williams retired Morse and Realmuto to avoid further damage.
An inning later, Prado grounded into a double play to end the inning and leave three runners stranded.
Game Notes
Howard set a Phillies record for most games played at first base with 1,299 ... Utley played in his 1,500th career game ... Ozuna reached base five times, also drawing a walk ... Miami was 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base.
