Padres hope to get win streak started against Rockies
May 2, 2015 - 2:34 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres attempt to win two straight for the first time since mid-April on Saturday evening in the second contest of a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies. The Padres halted a three-game slide in a big way last night, routing the Rockies 14-3. Yangervis Solarte drove in four runs and Derek Norris added three RBI.
Justin Upton had three hits, knocked in two runs, stole two bases and scored a pair of runs in the big win, just the Padres' second in nine games. That helped put San Diego in position to win two straight for the first time since a three-game run from April 19-21.
Ian Kennedy went six innings and allowed two runs -- both solo homers -- with six strikeouts. Kennedy, making his second start following a stint on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, bounced back from allowing eight runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.
"What was good about Ian is that he did it with one pitch ... the fastball," Padres manager Bud Black said. "I was encouraged by the competitiveness with one pitch."
Eddie Butler was charged with five runs -- three earned -- over four innings on the hill for Colorado, which has lost three in a row and four of its last five.
Drew Stubbs and Nolan Arenado hit home runs in defeat, one that saw Colorado get charged with four errors.
Jorge De La Rosa will make his third start of the season tonight for Colorado after missing the beginning of the campaign due to a groin injury.
The left-hander's 2015 debut was a forgettable one and came against the Padres, who got to him for nine runs (7 earned) and nine hits over just two innings of work to hand De La Rosa a 14-3 loss.
The Colorado hurler fell to 8-4 with a 4.87 earned run average in 24 games (20 starts) lifetime versus San Diego, but rebounded to post a solid outing on Saturday in a no-decision versus San Francisco. De La Rosa did not factor into a 5-4 loss, but allowed just two runs and four hits over five innings while striking out seven.
"I was more calm and made better pitches," said De La Rosa. "That was the key today."
After picking up a no-decision over his first three starts of the season, Brandon Morrow will try build off a victory tonight for San Diego.
The right-hander was tagged for five runs over six innings at Colorado on April 21, but beat the Dodgers five days later with seven innings of one-run ball. Morrow scattered five hits and walked one while lowering his ERA to 2.67.
Morrow, 30, is 0-1 with a 4.20 ERA in three career meetings with the Rockies.
The Rockies and Padres split a four-game series in Colorado from April 20-23.
