Escobar, Nationals rally past Marlins
May 5, 2015 - 4:31 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Yunel Escobar went 5-for-5 and capped a four-run eighth inning with a two-run single, lifting the Washington Nationals over the Miami Marlins 6-4 in a back-and-forth affair. The Marlins scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 4-2 lead. Bryan Morris (3-1) walked Ryan Zimmerman to begin the bottom half of the inning. After Wilson Ramos popped out, Ian Desmond smacked the first pitch he saw over the left-center field wall.
Pinch-hitter Tyler Moore kept the frame alive with a two-out single and advanced to third on Denard Span's double. Both runners scored on Escobar's hit to right.
Escobar hit all singles in the first five-hit game of his career for the Nationals, who have won three in a row and six of seven.
Matt Grace (1-0) got his first major league win despite giving up two hits and a walk in the eighth. Tanner Roark worked around a one-out single in the ninth for his first career save.
"It was a tough night, no doubt," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "Can't go on the road and cough up leads."
Washington starter Jordan Zimmermann allowed two runs -- one earned -- on six hits over seven innings. His counterpart, David Phelps, gave up two runs on six hits with three walks over 6 1/3 innings.
"We're swinging the bat well," said Zimmerman. "We got the win, and hopefully we get another one tomorrow."
Miami plated two runs in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie. Blake Treinen put men on first and second with two outs before handing the ball over to Grace. Pinch-hitter Jeff Baker hit an RBI single to right, then J.T. Realmuto was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ichiro Suzuki's infield single plated another run.
Each team scored once in the first inning. Martin Prado hit a one-out single and moved to second when Giancarlo Stanton reached on Jayson Werth's fielding error. Marcell Ozuna followed with an RBI single up the middle.
The Nationals loaded the bases twice in the bottom half. Escobar and Werth singled before Bryce Harper walked to fill the bags with one out. After Zimmerman hit a sacrifice fly, Ramos reached on an infield single to load the bases. But Desmond struck out looking to keep it 1-1.
Solid pitching dominated the middle innings for both teams, before Justin Bour led off the seventh with a homer. It was the first homer of the season for Bour.
Washington tied things up again in the home half. Pinch-hitter Clint Robinson worked a one-out walk, chasing Phelps from the game. Mike Dunn gave up a single to Escobar to put men on the corners with two outs. Sam Dyson came in from the bullpen and Werth greeted him with an RBI single up the middle. Harper popped out to end the inning.
