Chen, O's resume set with Mariners
May 20, 2015 - 1:26 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Wei-Yin Chen has done almost everything right this season except rack up some wins. He'll try to change that on Wednesday when the Baltimore Orioles resume their three-game series with the Seattle Mariners at Camden Yards.Chen was again tremendous on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels, but absorbed the loss, despite surrendering just two runs and five hits in seven innings to drop him to 1-2 to go along with a 2.53 ERA.
Chen has faced the Mariners six times and is 2-2 against them with a 3.00 ERA.
Seattle will counter with lefty Roenis Elias, who has pitched well in four starts while filling in for Hisashi Iwakuma, but is 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA. Elias did not get a decision on Thursday against Boston, but was terrific, as he yielded just a run in 6 1/3 innings of his team's 2-1 loss.
Elias is 0-1 in two starts versus the Orioles with a 1.69 ERA.
Nelson Cruz enjoyed his return to Baltimore, but his three-run home run was not enough as the Orioles beat the Mariners, 9-4.
Jimmy Paredes hit a two-run home run and drove in four, and Alejandro De Aza collected three hits for Baltimore. Starter Miguel Gonzalez (5-2) bounced back after a rocky first three innings to earn the win, allowing four runs in seven innings with eight strikeouts.
"He got better as the game went on," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "He threw some zeroes up after we scored and got back in it. That's pretty typical of Miguel."
Cruz, who leads the league with 16 home runs, had two hits and walked, and Robinson Cano ended an 0-for-11 stretch with a two-hit game. Taijuan Walker continued to struggle and allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings while Danny Farquhar (0-2) took the loss with three runs allowed in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
"I've said this before, but with a young pitcher like Taijuan, out of five starts, there's going to be two bad ones and one that is just OK and two that are going to dazzle you," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon.
Baltimore went 5-2 against Seattle last season and has won 10 of the last 13 head-to-head meetings inside Camden Yards.
