Brantley, Indians hold off White Sox
May 21, 2015 - 5:32 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Brantley's two-run double during the seventh inning helped the Cleveland Indians hold off the Chicago White Sox 4-3 in the third of a four-game set on Wednesday.Jose Ramirez went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI, while Mike Aviles also drove in a run for the Indians, who have won two in a row.
Shaun Marcum (1-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Columbus prior to the game, surrendered just two runs on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in his first major league start since July 6, 2013 with the New York Mets.
"He threw the ball great and kept us in the game," Brantley said of Marcum. "We have to keep it going as a group."
Adam Eaton and Conor Gillaspie each hit solo home runs and Alexei Ramirez supplied an RBI single for the White Sox, who have dropped their last two games on the heels of a six-game winning streak.
Cleveland went ahead in the seventh. Dan Jennings (0-1) relieved Carlos Rodon and walked Brett Hayes. Michael Bourn reached safely on a bunt. After Jason Kipnis moved the runners up on a sac bunt, Jose Ramirez put the Indians ahead on a soft grounder to left.
Brantley followed with a two-run double on a liner to right for a 4-1 lead.
Rodon gave up one run on four hits and five walks over six innings.
"He'll be fine," Eaton said of Rodon. "What's this, his second or third start? Give him some time, he'll be good for us."
Gillaspie trimmed the deficit to two runs with a solo shot to right-center field in the bottom half.
In the ninth, Cody Allen gave up a single to Jose Abreu and a pair of walks to Adam LaRoche and Avisail Garcia with one out. Gillaspie popped out to foul territory, but Alexei Ramirez made it a one-run game with an infield single.
Allen struck out pinch-hitter J.B. Shuck on three pitches to nail down his eighth save of the season.
Eaton opened the scoring for Chicago with two outs in the third by crushing a 2-1 fastball into the right-field seats.
Jose Ramirez and Ryan Raburn walked and Nick Swisher singled to load the bases with one out in the sixth. The tying run scored on Aviles' sacrifice fly to left. Rodon induced an inning-ending fly out from Brandon Moss to limit further damage.
