Brewers' Smith suspended 8 games

May 22, 2015 - 5:40 PM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Will Smith has been suspended eight games for having a foreign substance on his arm during Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves.

Smith, who has appealed the suspension, was ejected in the seventh inning of the Brewers' eventual 10-1 loss at Atlanta for having what he called a mix of sunscreen and rosin on his arm.

The left-hander had come on in relief of starter Matt Garza in the seventh with one out and men on the corners. He hit Pedro Ciriaco with a pitch before umpires, prompted by Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, approached Smith on the mound. Crew chief Jim Joyce felt Smith's forearm and signaled for him to leave the game.

Smith has appeared in 19 games this season and is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA, striking out 18 and walking six in 12 2/3 innings.

New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda received a 10-game suspension last year for having pine tar on his neck during a game against the Red Sox.
