White Sox and Twins go at it again in Windy City

May 23, 2015 - 2:03 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago White Sox are looking to bounce back from a tough series against Cleveland as they battle the Minnesota Twins Saturday in the second portion of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.

Talented lefty Chris Sale heads to the hill to start for Chicago, while Trevor May gets the starting nod for Minnesota.

The 25-year-old May hasn't been entirely effective this season, owning a below-average 2-3 record with a 5.15 ERA. He has been able to strike out 27 batters against only eight walks in seven appearances.

May was last in action against Tampa Bay last Saturday. His Twins took a 6-4 decision against Tampa Bay, in which the youngster lasted 6 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits and three runs, although he was tagged with the no- decision.

In three career starts against the White Sox, May is a perfect 3-0 with a 4.32 ERA, although he has allowed a .300 batting average against.

Sale, who had a dominant 2014 campaign in which he went 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA, was locked in an epic duel with Cleveland's Corey Kluber in his last outing Monday. Although he was hit with the no-decision, his team won the battle with a 2-1 victory in 10 innings. Sale pitched eight innings, allowing just four hits and one run with seven strikeouts.

This season Sale is 3-1 out of the gates, but his ERA currently hovers at 4.36. He's struck out 44 batters and walked just 13 so far in seven starts. The lone loss on the season for the 26-year-old came against these very Twins back on April 30 in Sale's worst outing to date. He gave up nine hits and nine runs (eight earned) in a mere three innings of work.

Pitching was the story for the White Sox on Friday night as Jeff Samardzija guided the hosts through eight innings and gave up just three hits and two runs, all while striking out nine batters as the White Sox took the 3-2 victory.

Minnesota jumped ahead of Chicago early on, gaining a 2-0 lead by the time the top half of the first inning was up. But Geovany Soto knotted the score in the fourth with a two-run double to left field, and J.B. Shuck's sacrifice fly in the eighth provided the winning score for the White Sox.

Phil Hughes got the start for the Twins and went seven innings, allowing eight hits and two runs with three punch outs. Aaron Thompson was tagged with the loss for Minnesota.

Alexei Ramirez paced the home team with three hits on the night, while Soto added two with a team-best two RBI. Torii Hunter and Trevor Plouffe provided the only two runs for the Twins, while Eduardo Escobar had the third and final hit of the night for the visitors.

Minnesota swept Chicago earlier this season in a four-game series. After Friday's clash, the Twins now own a 5-3 advantage in head-to-head matchups this season.
