O's go fishing for series win at Marlins Park
May 24, 2015 - 12:16 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Baltimore Orioles and Miami Marlins wrap up their three-game interleague series Sunday with an afternoon clash at Marlins Park. This comes just 13 hours after Saturday's meeting between the sides went to 13 innings, where a Martin Prado single with the bases loaded snapped the Marlins' eight-game losing streak.
Baltimore will try and pick up the win as the O's get set for their eight-game homestand. Miguel Gonzalez takes the mound for the start for Baltimore, while Miami counters with Tom Koehler.
Gonzalez has stepped up for the Orioles at the start of this 2015 campaign. He heads into the weekend with a 5-2 record in eight starts, and owns a 3.24 earned run average with 42 strikeouts. He's won his last two starts and has been victorious in three of his last four trips to the hill.
Gonzalez picked up the win Tuesday against Seattle despite giving up four runs. He lasted seven innings and struck out eight Mariners en route to his second win in a row.
In four road starts this season, Gonzalez is 2-2 with a 3.63 ERA and a .213 batting average against.
He'll go up against Koehler, the Marlins' 29-year-old righty that was selected in the 18th round of the 2008 draft. Koehler is 2-3 this season with a 3.70 ERA and 35 strikeouts compared with 15 walks.
Koehler's last four outings haven't helped the Marlins pick up victories. He's 0-1 in that span, and Miami has dropped every game in which he's taken the mound. Koehler earned the no-decision Tuesday against Arizona after going 6 2/3 innings and surrendering two unearned runs. The Marlins dropped the game, 4-2. Koehler is winless since an April 25 start against Washington.
In five appearances and four starts this season at home, Koehler is 1-1 with a 1.61 ERA. He's only allowed seven runs (five earned) in 28 innings on the hill.
It was a pitcher's battle Saturday in Miami, as neither team could get on the board until the home half of the 13th inning. Dan Haren got the start for Miami and went six innings while allowing seven hits and no runs with six strikeouts. Mike Wright pitched seven scoreless innings for Baltimore, giving up only three hits.
It was a back-and-forth battle all the way, as Miami seemed to get into striking distance several times in extra innings before the hosts could come through. And it didn't come without some controversy.
Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz was ejected from the game in the 12th inning after umpires discovered a foreign substance on his non-pitching forearm. It's the second time in a week a major league player has been tossed for the offense.
No batter for Miami had more than one hit in the contest. Dee Gordon, who entered the game leading the league in hits with 66, went 1-for-6 at the plate. Giancarlo Stanton was 0-for-4 with a pair of walks - one intentional to load the bases in the bottom of the 13th.
That led to Prado's game-winning single to right field, which drove in Adeiny Hechavarria for the deciding run.
The win was the first for Miami since a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers exactly 10 days earlier.
