Cardinals use early offense to down Diamondbacks
May 27, 2015 - 5:01 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jhonny Peralta drove in two runs and Randall Grichuk added a solo homer while knocking in a pair in St. Louis' 6-4 triumph over Arizona in the middle test of a three-game series.Matt Holliday contributed two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, with Yadier Molina also driving in a run.
Jaime Garcia (1-1) worked six innings for the win, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits with five strikeouts.
"It's been a long road for me," said Garcia, who last recorded a win on June 15, 2014. "I'm just trying to take it one game at a time."
Seth Maness recorded the final out of the contest to earn his third save.
Yasmany Tomas doubled twice and knocked in three runs for the Diamondbacks. Nick Ahmed homered while A.J. Pollock had two hits and scored twice in defeat.
Archie Bradley (2-2) gave up six runs on five hits with three walks over his 3 2/3-frame outing.
"I know I'm better than that," Bradley said. "It's frustrating putting the team in the situations I'm putting them in."
Ahmed's one-out solo blast in the second pulled the visitors within 4-3, but Grichuk began the bottom portion with a homer of his own to restore the two- run edge.
Another Tomas double, this one in the third, pulled Arizona back within a run after Pollock crossed home, then Grichuk plated Jason Heyward with a single to left in the home fourth and the Cards were up 6-4.
Arizona had runners on the corners with one down in the sixth but Ahmed grounded into an inning-ending double play. The D-backs loaded the bases in the seventh on a single and a pair of walks, but Tomas struck out swinging to end that threat.
Ahmed was stranded at second in the eighth, then in the ninth against Matt Belisle, a walk to Paul Goldschmidt then a single from Pollock and Heyward error put two in scoring position. Maness entered and grounded out Tomas to end the contest.
Tomas' two-run double with two down in the first staked the snakes to an early lead, but the Cards countered in the home half with four thanks to Holliday's RBI single, a two-run double by Peralta and a run-scoring groundout by Molina.
Game Notes
Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams exited in the sixth inning due to an apparent leg injury suffered on his fifth-inning double which later was revealed to be a strained right quad ... Tomas extended his hit streak to 10 games ... Holliday reached base in his first 42 games this season, tying a franchise record first set by Albert Pujols back in 2008.
