Mets and Reds go at it again

Jun 28, 2015 - 2:16 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds will get back to work Sunday at Citi Field.

Saturday's game between the Mets and Reds was suspended after six innings due to rain.

The game went into a rain delay at the end of the sixth, and after a 53-minute delay, the decision was made to suspend the contest and continue it on Sunday.

Play will resume at 1:10 p.m. (et), and the finale of the three-game set will begin 30 minutes after the end of the suspended contest.

Michael Lorenzen pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Reds and allowed a run on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts, while Matt Harvey allowed a run on five hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts for the Mets.

Cincinnati left the bases loaded in the second after Lorenzen flied out to end the frame, and the Mets went on top in the third when Curtis Granderson hit a two-out shot to left-center for his 13th homer of the season.

The Mets stranded men at the corners in the fourth, and the Reds tied the game in the fifth.

Tucker Barnhart led off with a double and moved to third on Lorenzen's sacrifice bunt. Brandon Phillips then punched a double to left to tie the game. Joey Votto and Todd Frazier struck out to end the inning.

With the rain getting harder through the game, the Mets had a chance to go on top in the sixth as the team loaded the bases with two outs. Manny Parra, though, came on in relief and got Granderson to fly out.

The Mets will unveil another young arm when Steven Matz makes his major league debut Sunday in the finale of this three-game set versus the Reds.

Matz has a 7-4 record and a 2.19 earned run average in 15 games (14 starts) at Triple-A Las Vegas. He has pitched 90 1/3 innings and the left-hander hopes to earn a spot in a promising rotation that features Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.

The 24-year-old Matz was selected by the Mets in the second round of the 2009 draft and starred at Ward Melville high school in East Setauket, New York.

Reds starting pitcher Josh Smith recently made his MLB debut and gets the nod opposite of Matz Sunday afternoon. Smith pitched three innings in Tuesday's 7-6 loss at Pittsburgh and was touched for four runs and three hits, including a home run, with six walks and three strikeouts.

"I'm super blessed to be here right now," said Smith. "I've got a lot to work on, but it was a great experience and I'll try to work on it every time I go out there."

The Reds went 2-4 against the Mets last season and the two clubs will meet again for four games at Cincinnati in late September.
