Mets promote Matz for MLB debut

Jun 28, 2015 - 5:39 PM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets have officially recalled pitching prospect Steven Matz from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Sunday's regularly scheduled game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Matz, currently listed 54th on MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects list, joins what will be a six-man rotation for the Mets for the time being. The team is attempting to limit the innings of ace Matt Harvey in his comeback from Tommy John surgery, as well as reigning National League Rookie of Year Jacob de Grom and promising youngster Noah Syndergaard.

The 24-year-old Matz, a Long Island native, leads the Pacific Coast League in both earned run average (2.19) and strikeouts (94) while posting a 7-4 record in 15 games (14 starts) this season. The 2009 second-round pick owns a 2.28 ERA over 66 career professional appearances, all but one of which have been starts.

Matz will take the mound following the conclusion of Sunday's resumption of the Mets-Reds game that was suspended by rain in the seventh inning last night.
