Phillies earn doubleheader split with Nats
Jun 29, 2015 - 4:12 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Phillies collected 16 hits -- including 15 singles -- to earn an 8-5 win over the Washington Nationals and a split of Sunday's doubleheader.Cesar Hernandez had four hits, and Maikel Franco drove in three runs for the Phillies, who did all of their damage in a pair of four-run innings.
Severino Gonzalez (3-2) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and also picked up his first big league hit.
"In general, he pitched well," said Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin. "He attacked. He did a real good job."
Tanner Roark (3-3) took the loss after being hammered for all eight Philadelphia runs on 12 hits in 3 1/3 innings.
"Up in the zone a little bit, and they had some balls that snuck through," said Nationals manager Matt Williams. "Just not his day."
Ian Desmond and Jose Lobaton led Washington's offense with a towering home run apiece.
Gonzalez got the Phillies on the board in the second with a run-scoring groundout, but Roark could not get the final out of the inning before allowing additional damage. Odubel Herrera plated another run with a base hit before Hernandez singled to put runners on the corners. Franco and Domonic Brown then delivered RBI hits for a 4-0 Phillies lead.
Washington pulled within one in the top of the fourth. After Clint Robinson drove in Yunel Escobar with a single, Desmond hit a two-run home run to deep left-center field to cut the Nats' deficit to 4-3.
Roark was unable to record a shutdown inning. Gonzalez and Herrera opened the home half of the fourth with singles, and Hernandez bunted them into scoring position. With the infield drawn in, Franco ripped a single through the middle to score both runners. Brown and Darin Ruf followed with hits, and Ruf's RBI single knocked Roark out of the game.
Reliever Felipe Rivero allowed a single to Cody Asche, and Carlos Ruiz's sacrifice fly scored Philadelphia's eighth run.
With one out in the sixth, Lobaton hammered a pitch to the upper deck in right field for a solo home run and knocked Gonzalez from the game.
Elvis Araujo entered the game in the seventh and allowed a leadoff hit to Michael Taylor. With two outs, Robinson drove in Taylor, and Washington got the potential tying run to the plate against Ken Giles before Lobaton grounded out to end the inning.
Jonathan Papelbon worked around a two-out single in the ninth to record his 14th save.
