Angels' Wilson takes mound vs. Yankees

Jun 29, 2015 - 2:42 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - C.J. Wilson attempts to rebound from a rough outing on Monday night when the Los Angeles Angels kick off a three-game set with the New York Yankees.

Wilson logged a season-low 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday against Houston, drilled for seven runs on eight hits and two walks. He fanned three in his shortest outing since only going five frames on May 18 at Toronto and fell to 5-6 on the year with a 3.92 earned run average.

"The mistakes (Wilson) made went a long way," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

The 34-year-old southpaw had won back-to-back outings following a 6-2 setback to the hosting Yankees on June 7. He allowed three homers in that game over seven innings, striking out eight while charged with six runs. Chris Young, Brett Gardner and Jose Pirela all homered off Wilson.

Wilson is 4-4 lifetime versus the Yankees with a pair of saves and a 3.41 ERA in 28 games with 11 starts.

The Angels won the final two contests of a three-game with the Seattle Mariners, taking Sunday's finale 3-2 in 10 innings as Kole Calhoun scored on a wild pitch in the frame.

Johnny Giavotella and Calhoun started the inning with consecutive singles off Tom Wilhelmsen. After Mike Trout was intentionally walked to load the bases, Albert Pujols grounded into a double play -- shortstop to home to first.

Wilhelmsen, though, then uncorked a wild pitch with Kyle Kubitza at the plate to end the game.

"A great win for the team," said Calhoun. "There's a lot of ways to score a run. Fortunately the ball got past (Seattle catcher Mike) Zunino and we won the game."

The Yankees come in having split a four-game set with the Houston Astros, dropping Sunday's finale 3-1.

Michael Pineda registered his first career complete game in a losing cause, with the right-hander reached for three runs -- two earned -- and fanning eight without a walk over eight innings.

Gardner's RBI single was one of just two New York hits as the Yankees settled for a split of this series.

CC Sabathia will start tonight's opener for the Yankees at 3-7 on the year with a 5.65 ERA.

Though Sabathia has not lost since May 28, he has just one victory over his five-start unbeaten streak and struggled in his club's 11-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. The 34-year-old lasted just 4 2/3 innings, charged with six runs on eight hits and two walks. He yielded two homers in a third straight no-decision.

Sabathia's last win did come against the visiting Angels on June 7, a solid outing in which the lefty yielded just a pair of runs over six innings and fanned seven before getting ejected for arguing balls and strikes. That put him above .500 for his career against Los Angeles at 9-8 with a 3.97 ERA in 19 starts.

The Yankees have won five in a row and seven of their past eight versus the Angels, including a three-game sweep in the Bronx from June 5-7.
