Giants hope to ride momentum against Marlins

Jun 30, 2015 - 2:47 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants have picked up some momentum of late, and now they turn their attention to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night as the teams open a three-game series at Marlins Park.

San Francisco (42-35) entered the day just a half-game back of the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants had the day off Monday after back-to-back wins against the Colorado Rockies over the weekend to cap their third consecutive series victory.

The Giants notched a 6-3 victory on Sunday behind Madison Bumgarner, who fanned eight over 7 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Bumgarner also homered himself, while Matt Duffy fell just a single short of hitting for the cycle.

Miami is just 1-5 on its current homestand, which wraps up with this series. The Marlins are coming off Sunday's 2-0 setback to the Dodgers in which they managed only five hits. In fact, the offense went 1-for-21 with runners in scoring position during the three-game series while striking out 36 times and drawing only two walks.

Leadoff hitter Dee Gordon extended his hitting streak to 10 games in Sunday's loss and leads the majors with a .353 batting average on the season. However, Miami is without its biggest offensive weapon in MVP candidate Giancarlo Stanton, who underwent surgery Sunday on his broken left hand and is expected to miss at least four weeks. Stanton was slugging a MLB-best .800 in June and leads the majors with 27 home runs to go along with 67 RBI.

"We all know we've lost a big bat in the middle of the order," manager Dan Jennings said. "(Stanton) won't be there so we're going to have to take better at-bats."

Mat Latos takes the hill for Miami. Home has not been kind to the right- hander, who is 1-3 with a 7.60 ERA across 34 1/3 innings at Marlins Park this season.

He gave up just three hits in seven innings against St. Louis in his last start, but

Latos faced the Giants on May 10 in San Francisco, where he went seven innings and gave up just one run.

Ryan Vogelsong draws the start for the Giants, as the right-hander looks to extend his 12 2/3-inning scoreless streak over his past two starts.

Vogelsong started opposite Latos during that May 10 meeting against Miami and worked seven innings of one-run ball. He owns a 1.67 ERA in six career starts against the Marlins.

These teams split a four-game bill in San Francisco back in May.
