Pujols, Aybar HRs lead Angels past Yankees

Jul 1, 2015 - 5:34 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Albert Pujols and Erick Aybar hit back-to- back homers off Ivan Nova in the sixth inning, and the Angels beat the Yankees 2-1 in the middle installment of a three-game series.

The blasts helped Andrew Heaney (1-0) earn his first big-league win in his seventh career start. Heaney made his season debut last week in place of the injured Jered Weaver and spun six quality innings.

The 24-year-old lefty was even better on Tuesday, striking out seven over as many innings and allowing just two hits and two walks.

One of the hits was a home run in the second inning by Mark Teixeira, his 19th of the season, but New York did not record a hit after the third frame.

"The bottom line is we didn't score runs," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We hit balls hard but right at people."

Pujols hammered a pitch to straightaway center leading off the sixth for his 13th home run in June, tying the club record for the most homers in any month.

Aybar followed two pitches later with another one to center, with his landing just over the 396-foot sign to give the Angels the lead.

"(Aybar) surprised me with that home run to center, the deepest part of the ballpark," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

Nova (1-1) was pulled after giving up a double to Matt Joyce later in the inning and wound up with a hard-luck loss. Nova was making his second start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April of 2014. He pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Phillies in his season debut last week.

Joe Smith tossed a scoreless eighth behind Heaney, and Huston Street closed out the Angels' fourth straight win with his 23rd save.
