Rockies-Diamondbacks Preview
Apr 29, 2016 - 6:18 AM While the Colorado Rockies' top rookie is already having a historic first month, the Arizona Diamondbacks' rising star is just starting to make his mark. With Arizona's Brandon Drury looking to stay hot, Trevor Story will try to match the rookie home run record for April and help the Rockies avoid their sixth consecutive defeat on Friday night when they open a three-game series at Chase Field.
Story became the first player to homer in each of his first four games, including four long balls to help Colorado take two of three at Arizona in the opening series.
The shortstop had cooled off with one home run over his previous 13 contests before setting the NL rookie record for April on Wednesday with his ninth in the team's seventh loss in eight games, 9-8 to Pittsburgh. He missed out on a chance to add to that total Thursday when the series finale was postponed because of rain and snow.
Now Story will try to continue his earlier success at Chase Field with an opportunity to equal Chicago White Sox slugger Jose Abreu's 2014 rookie mark.
"I don't think about (the record) at all," the 23-year-old said. "I feel good about the at-bats I've taken. Just trying to compete as best as I can."
After hitting .219 with four extra-base hits over his first 11 games, Drury is swinging the bat with more confidence recently. The 23-year-old infielder/outfielder has gone 12 for 29 (.414) with two home runs and four doubles in his past seven.
Drury, one of Arizona's top prospects, homered and doubled Thursday when the Diamondbacks snapped a two-game slide with a 3-0 win over St. Louis. He's just 2 for 18 lifetime versus Colorado, but is 1 for 3 versus right-hander Tyler Chatwood.
"We're going to have to find somewhere (for him to play Friday) and just keep running with it, because he's a darn good player," manager Chip Hale said.
Chatwood (2-2, 3.47 ERA) will try to pick up a Rockies rotation that has a 9.27 ERA over its last eight starts. The right-hander has allowed one earned run over 13 1/3 innings to win both road outings, including a 4-3 victory at Arizona on April 6.
He lost for the second time in as many home starts Saturday, allowing three runs, six hits and two walks over four innings in a 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Chatwood is 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA in four career starts versus Arizona (12-12). He's particularly done a nice job against Paul Goldschmidt, who is 1 for 9 in the matchups.
Arizona's Robbie Ray (1-0, 3.80) was off to a strong start before allowing five runs over three innings in Sunday's 12-10 loss to the Pirates. The left-hander may be able to bounce back versus Colorado (9-12) as he's 1-0 with a 2.04 ERA in three meetings.
Nolan Arenado is hitless in seven at-bats off him, though Charlie Blackmon has gone 5 for 8 with a triple in the matchup. Blackmon could be activated from the disabled list after missing the past 13 games with turf toe in his left foot.
DJ LeMahieu was 6 for 10 with two home runs in the opening series at Chase, where the Diamondbacks will try to even their record at 4-4 on a 10-game stay.
