BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox activated reliever Mike Timlin from the 15-day disabled list Thursday.
Timlin, 42, was on the DL retroactive to June 17 with left knee tendinitis. The righthander is 3-3 with a 7.06 ERA in 24 appearances this season, and he has also recorded one save.
To make room for Timlin, the Red Sox optioned righthander Chris Smith to Class AAA Pawtucket. Smith had appeared in three games, allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings.
