ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- All-Star closer Francisco Rodriguez hopes to get a chance to nail down a third straight win for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim against the Oakland Athletics on Monday, and move closer to Bobby Thigpen's single-season saves mark.
Rodriguez notched his 50th save of the season on Sunday after Gary Matthews Jr. tripled home the go-ahead run in a 5-3 victory over Minnesota. The impending free agent is on pace for 63 saves, and has converted his last 12 save opportunities against Oakland.
The A's appear to be an easy target, having lost 34 of their last 48 games. But Rodriguez, who is seven save shy of tying Thigpen's mark set in 1990, knows its out of his hands.
"It's something I can't control," Rodriguez said. "I don't want to sound selfish, but I would love to get that record. This is the best opportunity for me. I'd love to go for it."
Jered Weaver (10-9, 4.47 ERA), who is winless in his last two starts, will try and hand Rodriguez a lead. The righthander is 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA in five career starts vs. Oakland, but has not faced the A's this season.
Oakland, which split a four-game series with Seattle, hands the ball to Dallas Braden (3-3, 4.53). Braden is 1-1 with a 3.66 ERA in his last three starts.
