New York hands Detroit fifth straight loss
Jan 8, 2014 - 6:35 AM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Carmelo Anthony poured in a game-high 34 points to lead the New York Knicks to an 89-85 win over the Detroit Pistons from Madison Square Garden.Andrea Bargnani registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Raymond Felton scored 12 points for New York, which has won eight straight at home over Detroit.
"I'm just glad we showed grit," said Felton. "Earlier on in the season we would lose those types of games, but tonight we won."
Josh Smith and Andre Drummond each deposited double-doubles for the Pistons with Smith recording 21 points and 12 boards, while Drummond had 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Greg Monroe had 19 points to go along with seven rebounds in Detroit's fifth consecutive loss.
Anthony led a 22-3 charge that started with an alley-oop slam from Kenyon Martin at the 8:02 mark of the third.
Martin tied the game at 49 apiece when Anthony went berserk, hitting three straight 3s and scoring 13 points over the span. Iman Shumpert concluded the run with a three-point play to give the Knicks a 69-52 lead with just under three minutes left in the third.
Detroit trailed 73-58 heading into the final quarter.
Will Bynum made two shots around a Monroe free throw to help Detroit close to within 10 to open the frame.
Charlie Villanueva later cut into the lead with a jumper to pull within six, 83-77, with 4:37 left and Kyle Singler made it a one possession game with a triple just over a minute later.
Anthony then rattled home a 3-pointer with 2:11 remaining to push the lead to 86-80, but Smith responded with a 3 of his own to halve the deficit.
On the ensuing Knicks possession, Brandon Jennings picked the pocket of Felton and fed Drummond, who was fouled and split a pair at the line to make it a two-point game.
Felton committed another turnover on the following possession with just over a minute left.
Drummond gathered a Jennings miss and was off the mark on his short layup attempt, but Villanueva was fouled after he came down with Drummond's miss and made 1-of-2 from the line.
The Knicks wilted down the stretch to allow Detroit back into the game as Anthony was called for a charge with 27.1 ticks to go which gave the Pistons a shot at the lead.
Smith's jumper was short and Felton made 1-of-2 at the line, but his second attempt was rebounded by Anthony with 4.9 seconds left. Anthony calmly knocked down both of his attempts to seal the win for New York.
"It was a very good effort," said Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks. "(We) got down 17 and was able to fight back. We just didn't make any shots in the end to get over the hump. We played hard though."
New York led 24-21 after the first quarter and both teams were tied at 41 at the half.
