Teague helps Atlanta take 2-1 series lead over Indiana
Apr 25, 2014 - 3:12 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Teague scored 22 points with a playoff career-high 10 assists and the Atlanta Hawks took a 2-1 series edge over the top-seeded Indiana Pacers with a 98-85 win on Thursday.Kyle Korver tallied 20 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point range, DeMarre Carroll netted 18 and Paul Millsap recorded a 14-point, 14-rebound double- double in the win.
Including the playoffs, Atlanta owns a 14-2 home record against the Pacers since the start of the 2007-08 season.
Lance Stephenson paced Indiana with 21 points to go along with 13 rebounds, while Paul George added 12 points with 14 rebounds in the setback.
"We have a dream of winning it all," said George. "We've gotta be much more tougher than that. And I don't think its there. Our toughness is questionable right now."
Luis Scola deposited 17 points off the bench and David West dropped in 16 points with seven rebounds and five assists for Indiana.
Game 4 is Saturday in Atlanta.
Neither team shot the ball particularly well, but Atlanta could attribute this win to its shooting from beyond the arc and its intent to draw fouls by pounding the ball inside.
The Hawks shot 12-of-34 from 3-point range and made 30 of their 37 attempts from the free throw line. Atlanta made just 2-of-16 3-pointers in the first half.
"(In) the first half, we were shooting bad from 3," said Teague. "(In) the second half, we came out (and) made some big shots. (Korver) was huge in the second half for us. Everybody just played well. It was big win."
Indiana, meanwhile, made 5-of-20 shots from deep and converted 16-of-21 from the line.
George made a pair of free throws to push Indiana in front, 40-39, early in the third. Carroll, who did not attempt a 3-pointer in the first half, nailed a trey before converting a three-point play that started an 11-2 spurt for the Hawks.
Carroll found Korver along the near sideline for a corner triple that capped the run and gave the Hawks a 50-42 advantage with 8 1/2 minutes left.
The Hawks lead was six when they decided to hold for the last shot of the third and Lou Williams buried a 3 with 1.2 seconds left for a 67-58 margin after three.
Shelvin Mack knocked in a 3-pointer early in the fourth that stretched the lead to 12, 72-60.
Scola scored four straight points later in the frame that cut the deficit to four with just under 6 1/2 minutes remaining.
Atlanta led by six when Teague made a circus 3-pointer from the far wing with the shot clock expiring that pushed the margin to 89-80 with just over two minutes left.
Scola was riding Teague up the far sideline when Teague rose up over the forward and heaved one in as the shot clock sounded.
Following a pair of misses at the free throw line from Stephenson, Korver nailed a trey before Teague made a layup to increase the cushion to 14 as the Hawks cruised in the final minutes.
Earlier, Elton Brand made a tough layup inside, was fouled and hit the subsequent free throw with 1:49 remaining in the first to give Atlanta a seven-point edge. Indiana outscored the Hawks, 9-2, over the final 1 1/2 minutes to knot the score at 24-apiece after one.
Millsap capped the first half scoring with a pair of free throws to help the Hawks to a 39-38 lead at the break.
