Raptors bring back Vasquez, add F Johnson
Jul 17, 2014 - 5:17 PM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Raptors finalized a new contract with guard Greivis Vasquez on Thursday, while also officially signing free agent forward James Johnson.Vasquez, a restricted free agent and a key contributor to Toronto's run to the 2013-14 Atlantic Division title, agreed to a reported two-year deal worth $13 million. Johnson, who spent parts of two seasons with the Raptors from 2011-12, received a two-year, $5 million contract according to the Raptors.
Acquired as part of last December's trade with Sacramento that sent high- scoring forward Rudy Gay to the Kings, Vasquez averaged 9.5 points and 3.7 assists as one of the Raptors' primary options off the bench.
The Raptors went 41-22 following the swap, in which they also obtained another valued bench piece in forward Patrick Patterson.
Vasquez returns to a deep backcourt in Toronto, which also retained standout point guard Kyle Lowry and added veteran Lou Williams this offseason.
Johnson averaged career bests of 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds over 62 games with the Raptors in 2011-12, his last season with the club. The five-year pro was traded to Sacramento the following summer and played with Memphis in 2013-14, averaging 7.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists over 52 games.
