"He was ready for this game. He had a major impact on it," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said of Chandler.
Dallas used a 9-0 run and forced six Knicks turnovers to pull away in the extra session.
Monta Ellis stripped Samuel Dalembert from behind and fed Chandler for a dunk for a 101-99 lead with 1:37 in overtime. After a Dallas miss a trip down the floor later, Chandler Parsons forced turnover to give the Mavericks an extra possession. Dirk Nowitzki then hit a fallaway from the foul line with 43.5 seconds left and another Knicks turnover put the game away, with Ellis swiping a pass from Jose Calderon.
New York's J.R. Smith hit a jumper with less than a second remaining in regulation to force overtime.
Nowitzki posted his first 30-point game of the season, netting 30 on the number to go with six boards for the Mavericks, who snapped a brief two-game slide. They've won seven of their last nine games overall.
Calderon tallied 21 points, 10 boards and four assists for New York, which has dropped four of its last five games.
"We made some mistakes down the stretch you can't make on the road," Knicks coach Derek Fisher said.
Anthony missed the game due to back spasms.
Ellis scored the first six points of a 10-0 Mavericks run to put them in front late in the fourth. Parsons' layup capped the surge and gave the hosts an 88-83 advantage. Calderon then nailed consecutive triples to put the Knicks back in front, 89-88, with 2:01 left in regulation.
Nowitzki and Parsons nailed four consecutive free throws before J.R. Smith received a friendly roll on a floater. Nowitzki knocked down a right wing jumper at the other end and New York responded out of a timeout when Amar'e Stoudemire threw down Calderon's alley-oop pass to get the Knicks within 94-93 with 43.1 seconds to play.
New York made a defensive stand, but Dalembert was unable to power past Nowitzki in the paint and Devin Harris split a pair of foul shots with 7.9 ticks on the clock for a 95-93 Dallas lead.
Smith then took a couple dribbles to his left from the right wing and nailed a contested fallaway over the outstretched arm of Al-Farouq Aminu to tie the game with nine-tenths of a second remaining.
Dallas didn't get a shot off following a timeout.
The Knicks led 24-19 following a quarter of play, but Dallas outscored them 27-18 in the second and took a 46-42 advantage into the break.
Pablo Prigioni scored 12 points during a 31-25 third period for the Knicks, helping them head into the fourth with a 73-71 edge.
