Hawks win 15th straight, set franchise mark
Jan 24, 2015 - 6:21 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Hawks have become the most dominant team in the NBA over the past two months. They now have a franchise-record 15 consecutive victories.
Paul Millsap, had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Jeff Teague scored 17 with nine assists and the Hawks pulled away for a 103-93 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder Friday night.
Atlanta, which hasn't lost since Dec. 26 at home against Milwaukee, has won 29 of its last 31 games. Its only other defeat in the stretch came at Orlando when Tobias Harris nailed a jumper at the buzzer on Dec. 13. That marked the end of a home-and-home set.
The Hawks previously won 14 in a row Nov. 16 - Dec. 14, 1993, the last season in which the Hawks won a division title.
Al Horford posted 14 points and 12 boards, and DeMarre Carroll and Dennis Schroder each had 13 points for Atlanta.
"It's cool to get your name in the record books, but at the same time we still have a big task at hand," Carroll said. "That's to make it to the playoffs and bring an NBA championship here to Atlanta."
Russell Westbrook scored 22 with 11 assists, and Kevin Durant chipped in 21 points for Oklahoma City, which had a four-game winning streak broken.
Millsap had 11 points in the final quarter, when the Hawks extended their margin.
Durant made 1-of-2 at the charity stripe to start the fourth to get the visitors within 79-76, but Atlanta scored the next eight, capped by Schroder's layup. He had six points during the surge.
OKC didn't get closer than eight the rest of the way.
Westbrook scored 13 in the opening quarter to help the Thunder to a 30-23 advantage after one period. They were ahead as many as nine in the second, but the Hawks gained a 48-47 lead at the break when Korver drove in for a dunk in the final second. The Thunder never regained the lead.
"I thought we came out very solid defensively and made them work for every shot," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "We had a lead and got away from that in the last two or three minutes of the second quarter."
