NBA's Stoudemire joins Knicks for one day

Jul 27, 2016 - 7:27 AM Six-time NBA All-Star Amar'e Stoudemire signed for the New York Knicks late on Tuesday - and promptly announced he was retiring after 14 years as a professional.

"Although my career has taken me to other places around the country, my heart had always remained in the Big Apple. Once a Knick, Always a Knick," the 33-year-old forward said.

Stoudemire played with the Knicks 2010-15 having joined from the Phoenix Suns before going on to join the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat for brief spells.

He returned to New York on a one-day contract to end his career.

"For parts of six years, Amar'e Stoudemire was the face of the New York Knicks franchise because of his excellence on the court and his dedication to our community and our fans across the world," Knicks general manager Steve Mills said.

"When Amar'e asked us to retire as a Knick, we were honored to oblige."

Stoudemire averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds in 846 career NBA games and won an Olympic bronze medal with the United States in 2004.
