Sooners bounce back by trouncing Texas Tech

Jan 29, 2015 - 4:02 AM Norman, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Spangler scored 20 points and 24th- ranked Oklahoma snapped out of its recent funk with a vengeance, dominating Texas Tech on both ends en route to an 81-36 rout at the Noble Center.

After dropping four of their last five games -- three to ranked opponents -- a matchup with the Big 12's last-place team was just what the Sooners needed. Oklahoma (13-7, 4-4 Big 12) shot 52.5 percent from the floor, held the Red Raiders to an 11-of-52 field goal rate and scored 20 straight points at one stage to get back on track.

"It's nice to play well as a team on both ends of the court," said Spangler, who finished 8-of-9 from the field. "We finally played 40 minutes of pretty good defense, and we got out and ran, which is when we are at our best."

Buddy Hield chipped in 15 points with seven rebounds for the Sooners, with Isaiah Cousins adding 13 points in the easy win.

Texas Tech (11-10, 1-7), coming off Saturday's upset of then-No. 9 Iowa State, didn't have a player score in double figures. Robert Turner and Stan Mays paced the Red Raiders with eight points each.

Oklahoma's defensive prowess was evident from start to finish, as the Red Raiders misfired on 16 of their initial 18 shot attempts and fell behind by a 19-7 count 12 minutes in following a 12-2 Oklahoma run.

The Sooners also closed out the period on a tear, scoring the final 11 points in building a commanding 37-16 lead at the break. Cousins began the surge with a trey and Spangler followed with a 3-point play before Hield netted five straight.

"We missed some shots early on and the rest of it was downhill," Texas Tech head coach Tubby Smith said. "We had no self confidence and Oklahoma is the type of team that if you do that, you get beat bad."

Texas Tech went just 6-of-24 from the field while committing nine turnovers during the opening stanza, and the Red Raiders struggled even more on the offensive end early in the second half.

Their first basket of the session didn't come until Mays hit a 3-pointer with around 12 minutes left, which ended a 22-2 Oklahoma run that put the game completely out of reach.

The Sooners forced six turnovers during the stretch and went ahead by 40 when Jordan Woodard's layup off a Frank Booker steal extended the margin to 57-17 with more than 13 minutes to play.

Oklahoma's lead never dipped below 37 points thereafter.

Game Notes

The Red Raiders went 3-of-17 from 3-point range after making 11-of-24 attempts from beyond the arc in Saturday's win over Iowa State ... Texas Tech has now lost nine straight on the road since a 68-60 decision over Oklahoma in Norman on Feb. 12 of last season ... The Red Raiders also have dropped 25 straight as the visitor to ranked teams.
