Iowa State rallies past OU
Mar 3, 2015 - 5:18 AM Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - It may have been Senior Night at Hilton Coliseum, but it was junior Georges Niang and sophomore Monte Morris that gave Iowa State fans a night to remember.Niang and Morris led a furious second-half rally and the 17th-ranked Cyclones stunned No. 15 Oklahoma 77-70 on Monday in a crucial Big 12 showdown.
"Early on, we got down on ourselves, and we weren't playing Cyclone basketball," said Morris.
Niang posted 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Morris scored 19 for Iowa State (12-8, 11-6 Big 12), which had lost its last two games. Jameel McKay added 14 points and 12 boards off the bench.
Senior Dustin Hogue contributed seven points and 10 rebounds in his final home game.
With this result, the Kansas Jayhawks clinched the Big 12 regular-season title for the 11th straight season.
Buddy Hield scored a game-high 26 points to lead Oklahoma (20-9, 11-6), which has lost four straight matchups in Ames.
"We didn't do the things we needed to do in the second half at all," Sooners coach Lon Kruger said.
The Cyclones were slow out of the gate and trailed by 20 five minutes into the second half before catching fire.
Niang scored five straight to jumpstart the rally and Morris followed with the next eight points to cut the deficit into single digits. Niang then hit a jumper and Morris found Hogue for a slam that had ISU within three.
Out of a timeout, Morris blew past Isaiah Cousins for a layup and Hogue canned a 3. The 22-0 run, which took less than 5 1/2 minutes of game time, gave the Cyclones their first lead.
"I thought the guys really fought hard," said Niang.
After TaShawn Thomas tied the game at 50 with a pair of free throws, Niang led a 9-2 surge that left ISU comfortably in front.
Four different players scored during a 10-2 start for the Sooners, who dominated the first half and took a 37-18 lead into the break.
