No. 21 West Virginia routs VMI

Nov 27, 2014 - 6:49 AM Charleston, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Jevon Carter had 28 points and No. 21 West Virginia forced a school-record 36 turnovers in a 103-72 win over VMI on Wednesday night.

Juwan Staten added 17 points, six assists and four steals for the Mountaineers (6-0), who captured the Puerto Rico Tip-Off title on Sunday, beating then-No. 17 Connecticut. Jonathan Holton tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and four blocks.

West Virginia is off to its first 6-0 start since the 2009-10 Final Four team started 11-0. The Mountaineers also tied a school record with 26 steals.

QJ Peterson ended with 13 points for the Keydets (2-3). Craig Hinton donated 10 points in the lopsided defeat.

VMI actually held a 19-16 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. However, the Mountaineers scored the next eight points for a 24-19 edge.

Ahead 26-24 moments later, West Virginia used a 14-3 run to pull away. Carter scored the final seven points of the surge to make it 40-27 with 3:53 left.

The Mountaineers led 53-35 at the half and extended their lead to as many as 35 in the second half.
