Maryland holds on to beat Indiana

Feb 12, 2015 - 5:53 AM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Melo Trimble and Dez Wells each netted 18 points to help No. 19 Maryland avenge an earlier loss to Indiana with a 68-66 win on Wednesday night.

Jake Layman tallied 14 points for the Terrapins (20-5, 8-4 Big Ten), who have won two of their last three.

"That was a great college basketball game," Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon said. "It was a great win for our team."

Maryland dropped an 89-70 decision in Bloomington back on Jan. 22.

Yogi Ferrell led all scorers with 23 points in the loss, while Troy Williams added 17 points with 10 rebounds for the Hoosiers (17-8, 7-5).

Layman dropped in a 3-pointer to begin the second half and push the Terps up 38-34. Indiana countered with two straight baskets to tie the game, and it was back-and-forth the rest of the way.

Wells' layup with over five minutes left made it a 57-51 Maryland lead, then Ferrell followed a Robert Johnson 3 with one of his own to tie it once again.

After Williams' tip-in put Indiana up by two, Well made a jumper that kicked off a 6-0 run that Trimble capped with a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left. Ferrell buried a trey seconds later to cut the deficit to one before Wells split two free throws to account for the final margin.

Ferrell did have a pair of chances to win it in the closing seconds, but his 3-pointer was off the mark and his follow-up jumper rattled out as the Terps held on.

"That shot's going to be in the back of my mind for a while now. It felt good, looked good, it just didn't go in," Ferrell said.

Maryland went up 8-3 in the early going, but the Hoosiers soon took the lead on Hanner Mosquera-Perea's layup prior to the second media timeout. Trimble's layup with 36 seconds left in the first gave the hosts a 35-34 lead at the break.
