Kaminsky, Wisconsin crush Ohio State
Mar 9, 2015 - 5:15 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - If Frank Kaminsky didn't already have Big Ten Player of the Year wrapped up, he sealed the deal on Sunday.Kaminsky netted 20 points and No. 6 Wisconsin will carry momentum into the conference tournament following a 72-48 drubbing of Ohio State in the regular- season finale for both teams.
"This was kind of a statement game for us going into the Big Ten tournament, beating a good team on their home floor," Kaminsky said.
Bronson Koenig added 15 points and Sam Dekker scored 10 for the Badgers (28-3, 16-2 Big Ten), who had already wrapped up the Big Ten regular-season crown. They will be the top seed in the conference tournament in Chicago, which begins on March 11.
"You have games like this where nothing seems to work," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said.
Wisconsin has won six of its last seven games away from home.
Freshman phenom D'Angelo Russell paced Ohio State (22-9, 11-7) with 17 points and five assists.
The early portion of the second half belonged to Russell. After Kaminsky scored six of Wisconsin's first eight points to start the period and give the Badgers a 46-30 lead, Russell caught fire, scoring six straight points to make it a 10-point game. He also assisted on Shannon Scott's 3-pointer and hit a jumper earlier in the half.
Russell then found Jae'Sean Tate for a three-point play to cap a 12-2 run.
But Koenig answered the bell for Wisconsin, scoring the game's next eight points to make it 54-39.
Wisconsin fell behind 2-0, but Nigel Hayes hit a 3-ball on the Badgers' third possession and Kaminsky followed with a jumper. Wisconsin never trailed after that.
