No. 20 Michigan State trounces Rider

Nov 28, 2014 - 5:45 AM Orlando, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Denzel Valentine scored a game-high 19 points with five rebounds to lead No. 20 Michigan State to a 77-45 victory over Rider in the Orlando Classic.

Bryn Forbes finished with 15 points, Travis Trice and Gavin Schilling both had 10 points and six rebounds and Matt Costello supplied six points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Spartans (4-1), who won their third straight game.

Michigan State will face Marquette on Friday.

Matt Lopez scored 14 points and Kahlil Thomas contributed seven points and six rebounds for the Broncs (2-3), who dropped a second straight game.

Trice and Marvin Clark Jr. both nailed 3-pointers as Michigan State jumped out to a 10-1 lead nearly four minutes in.

Forbes netted seven points during a 16-4 burst that gave the Spartans a commanding 32-11 advantage heading into halftime.

Michigan State drained 3-pointers on three straight possessions -- two of which were made by Valentine -- to increase its lead to 43-15 nearly three minutes into the second half.

The Spartans led by as many as 35 points down the stretch.

Valentine finished 5-for-8 from 3-point range ... Michigan State is now 6-1 against current members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference ... The Spartans own a 133-30 all-time record in the month of November ... It was the first meeting between the two programs ... The Spartans shot 49.1 percent (27- of-55) from the floor and held the Broncs to 25.8 percent shooting (16-of-62).
