Wells, No. 17 Maryland top PSU

Feb 5, 2015 - 6:34 AM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Dez Wells had 23 points and seven rebounds and No. 17 Maryland defeated Penn State 64-58 on Wednesday night.

Jake Layman finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for Maryland (19-4, 7-3), which had dropped two of its last three games coming in.

"I thought we executed at a high level offensively during the last seven or eight minutes and we were really good defensively the last few minutes too. It was a good win and I am proud of our guys," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said.

D.J. Newbill posted 18 points, seven boards and five assists, while Geno Thorpe added 10 points for the Nittany Lions (14-9, 2-8), who have lost eight of their last 10 contests.

I think we're a good team, I really do. We're just not getting the breaks; we're not getting the bounces. We can't finish games defensively or offensively," PSU coach Patrick Chambers said.

Damonte Dodd split a pair of free throws, Layman hit a jumper and Dodd's dunk off a Melo Trimble dish staked Maryland to a 57-52 advantage with 2:14 remaining.

Brandon Taylor sandwiched 3-pointers around a Wells jumper to trim the PSU margin to a point, 59-58, but the Nittany Lions never got over the hump.

Wells sunk two foul shots with 39 ticks on the clock, and after Newbill was off the mark on a left elbow jumper, Wells split two from the charity stripe for a 62-58 Terps spread.

Following an empty PSU possession, Trimble sealed the outcome with two free throws.

There were nine lead changes and five ties in the first half, and Maryland led 29-28 at the break.

Game Notes

Maryland has won nine straight games in College Park ... This was the first meeting between the schools as Big Ten members. Maryland routed PSU 62-39 on Dec. 1, 2010 in their last encounter as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge ... Trimble was 0-of-5 from the field and netted just four points. He did have eight assists.
