No. 1 Kentucky remains unbeaten with win over Alabama
Feb 1, 2015 - 5:58 AM Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Willie Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns each scored 12 points in the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats' 70-55 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Wildcats (21-0, 8-0 SEC), who are off their best start since beginning 23-0 in 1965-66, became the lone unbeaten team left in the country after No. 2 Virginia lost to fourth-ranked Duke on Saturday.
Devin Booker and Aaron Harrison added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Kentucky, which shot 58.5 percent from the field.
"We're an efficient team," Kentucky head coach John Calipari said. "Today our post play was good, which is why we shot over 50 percent. Because now it opens up everything else."
The Wildcats completed a regular-season sweep after posting a rather easy 70-48 romp in Tuscaloosa on Jan. 17.
Shannon Hale ended with 13 points for the Crimson Tide (13-8, 3-5), who played without second-leading scorer Ricky Tarrant due to a lower leg injury. Levi Randolph and Retin Obasohan contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
"Thought our guys competed for forty minutes. I think there were some things we can build off as a team," Alabama head coach Anthony Grant said. "We'll take this game, and try to learn from it."
Towns scored all 12 of his points in the first 12 minutes, helping Kentucky jump out to a 28-10 lead. The score was 37-24 at the half.
Ahead 44-31, the Wildcats scored eight straight points to put the game out of reach. Andrew Harrison capped the burst with a 3-pointer to make it 52-31 with 14:51 to play.
