Kansas clinches share of another Big 12 title

Feb 25, 2014 - 5:53 AM Lawrence, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Naadir Tharpe had 19 points and five assists, and No. 5 Kansas clinched at least a share of its 10th straight Big 12 title with an 83-75 win over Oklahoma.

Andrew Wiggins and Wayne Selden each gave 15 points, while Joel Embiid scored 12 points with 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks (22-6, 13-2 Big 12), who have won their past four games.

It is an NCAA record 57th time that Kansas has either won or shared a conference regular-season title.

"To be at home, to hear the fans and all that, it's a beautiful feeling. It just shows the tradition of Kansas and what it means to us," Tharpe said.

Cameron Clark had 18 points, Buddy Hield scored 16 and Jordan Woodard gave 10 points and six helpers for the Sooners (20-8, 9-6), who had won three of four coming in.

"The difference really is in the runs they make, and that's what you have to avoid. Easier said than done," OU head coach Lon Kruger said.

Oklahoma was trailing by two points with under seven minutes to play after Clark hit a jumper to make it a 65-63 game. After Tharpe hit two free throws, misses at either end was followed by a miss from Je-lon Hornbeak, with Perry Ellis making his two from the stripe for a 69-63 lead.

A jumper from Isaiah Cousins followed by a free throw from Ryan Spangler made it a three-point game with four minutes to play.

Tharpe had his jumper blocked by Cousins, but he then stole the ball off of Hornbeak and put in a layup. Spangler was blocked by Embiid at the other end and Wiggins drained a 3-pointer for a 74-66 advantage with under three minutes to play.

A Hield 3-pointer with 1 1/2 minutes left made it a 76-71 game, but Tharpe countered with a jumper, and the Sooners never got closer than six down the stretch.

Kansas had built a 15-4 lead five minutes in after a Wiggins jumper, but Oklahaom answered with a 13-2 run to tie the game.

The Jayhawks closed the half with 10 unanswered points to take a 42-33 lead into the locker room.

A 13-4 run from Oklahoma to start the second half saw the team tie the game at 46-all on a Hield three-point play four minutes in.
