No. 9 Virginia cruises past Norfolk State

Nov 17, 2014 - 6:12 AM Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Anderson scored 11 points and Mike Tobey had 10 in a balanced effort as No. 9 Virginia rolled past Norfolk State 67-39 on Sunday.

Nine different players reached the scoring column in Virginia's second straight blowout to begin the season. The Cavaliers (2-0) crushed James Madison, 79-51, on Friday.

"The unselfishness defensively and offensively will always be important to us, and that showed in the statistics," UVA coach Tony Bennett said.

Virginia got a boost with a pair of players returning from suspension. Starting point guard London Perrantes had seven points and four assists, and Evan Nolte scored five points off the bench. Both players had been suspended for two preseason games and the season opener for offseason violations.

Jeff Short accounted for nearly half of Norfolk State's points, netting a game-high 19 on 6-of-15 shooting. Devonte Banner was the next highest scorer with just five points.

NSU (1-1) was coming off an 81-43 win over Division II Pfeiffer.

"Tonight Virginia played extremely well. We didn't play great at all offensively," Spartans coach Robert Jones said.

Short's triple 5 1/2 minutes in gave Norfolk State a 6-5 lead, but Malcolm Brogdon canned a pair of triples to bookend an 8-0 Virginia run.

Marial Shayok then got hot for the Cavaliers, hitting two 3-pointers and a long two in a 3 1/2 minute window. His second 3-ball at 7:18 made it 29-13.

Short scored the final 12 Norfolk State points of the first half. He was the only Spartan to score in the last 11 1/2 minutes of the half. Virginia led 42-22 at the break.

Anderson's trey early in the second half set the tone, as Virginia rolled the rest of the way.
