Anderson, Gill power No. 8 Virginia past Tennessee State

Nov 26, 2014 - 7:03 AM Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Anderson and Anthony Gill scored 36 points between them without missing a shot as No. 8 Virginia steamrolled Tennessee State 79-36 on Tuesday.

Anderson paced Virginia with 20 points on 7-of-7 from the floor, including five 3s, while Gill chipped in with 16 points and nine boards on 6-for-6. The Cavaliers (5-0) shot 51.7 percent as a team.

"Justin had his feet set and good rhythm shots. That was Mike's first double- double," UVA coach Tony Bennett said.

Mike Tobey posted the first double-double of his career with 13 points and a personal-best 16 rebounds.

Anderson hit two 3-pointers during Virginia's 13-2 start. UVA's defense, which has been its calling card under head coach Tony Bennett, locked down and held the Tigers to eight points over the first 10-plus minutes of the game.

Gill and Anderson had 27 points on 10 shots between them in the first half, and the Cavaliers owned a 42-17 lead after 20 minutes.

Anderson scored the first eight points of the second half and Virginia opened the stanza on a 20-0 run before coasting to the finish line.

Xavier Richards and Marcus Roper both scored 10 points to lead Tennessee State (2-3).

Game Notes

Virginia is 5-0 for the first time since 2007-08 ... The Tigers are now 0-5 against ranked teams since knocking off No. 9 Murray State on Feb. 9, 2012.
