Maryland knocks off No. 13 Iowa State

Nov 26, 2014 - 5:27 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Layman and Jared Nickens scored 15 points each and Maryland knocked off No. 13 Iowa State 72-63 on Tuesday night in the final of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.

Dez Wells added 14 points and Melo Trimble scored 11 for the Terrapins (5-0), who are off to their best start since going 8-0 in 2006.

Bryce Dejean-Jones had a game-high 17 points to lead the Cyclones (3-1) and Georges Niang scored 10.

Dejean-Jones gave Iowa State its last lead on a layup with 14:30 remaining in the first half.

Maryland followed with a 10-2 run punctuated by consecutive 3-pointers from Layman and Trimble for a seven-point lead.

The Terrapins were up 37-34 at the break and pushed the lead to double digits 5:50 into the second half. They led by as many as 15 on a couple of Trimble foul shots with 3:07 remaining.

Dejean-Jones' layup pulled the Cyclones within six points with 34 seconds left, but they got no closer.

Naz Long, Monte Morris and Niang missed three consecutive 3-pointers in the span of about 10 seconds as the Cyclones tried to cut a seven-point deficit to four in the waning moments.

It was the first meeting between the two programs ... The Terrapins went 8- of-19 from 3-point range and shot 44.1 percent overall ... Iowa State shot 29.7 percent and was 6-of-27 on 3s ... Maryland faces Monmouth on Friday ... Iowa State's next game is Dec. 2 against Lamar.
