No. 20 Iowa State pulls away to rout Lamar

Dec 3, 2014 - 4:47 AM Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryce Dejean-Jones had 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists and No. 20 Iowa State pulled away starting late in the first half for a 96-59 win over Lamar on Tuesday.

Matt Thomas led the Cyclones (4-1) with 14 points and Georges Niang scored 13, including seven during a big run at the end of the first half that pulled them out of a three-point hole.

"We were a little mental out there again tonight, missing some shots early," said Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg. "It was great to see (the shots go down) in the second half."

Iowa State bounced back from a loss to Maryland last Tuesday in the final of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic and collected its 23rd consecutive win at home against non-conference opponents.

LeMon Gregory scored 13 points to lead Lamar (2-5), which has lost five of its last six.

Dejean-Jones had 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists in the first half but the Cyclones shot just 40 percent from the field, making only four of their 20 3-point attempts as they labored to take control.

Still, they held the Cardinals to 30 percent shooting and led 38-22 at the break after ending the half on a 21-2 run.

The flurry came after Dontavious Sears' 3-pointer gave Lamar a 20-17 lead with 8 1/2 minutes remaining.

The Cyclones shot 69 percent in the second half and led by as many as 38 points.

"We had a pretty good plan coming into tonight, and for the first 12 minutes of the first half, I thought we stuck with that plan," said Lamar coach Tic Price.

"But in the second half, we got punched in the mouth and we didn't respond. This is one of the best teams in the country but we have to be able to respond to situations like this. The important thing is to learn from this, and get better as we prepare for (our next game)."
