New Mexico knocks off unbeaten CSU

Jan 4, 2015 - 6:52 AM Albuquerque, NM (SportsNetwork.com) - Freshman Sam Logwood scored 15 points off the bench and New Mexico knocked off 24th-ranked and previously-unbeaten Colorado State, 66-53, Saturday night.

The Rams (14-1, 1-1 MWC) were the third unbeaten team to lose on Saturday. No. 6 Villanova fell in overtime at Seton Hall, and TCU lost to 17th-ranked West Virginia.

That leaves only Kentucky, Duke and Virginia, the top three teams in the nation, still without a loss.

Logwood came into Saturday averaging just 3.2 points, but made all five of his shots from the field and all four attempts from the foul line. Devon Williams added 13 points for New Mexico (10-4, 2-0 MWC), which has won seven of its last eight games.

"I just went in with an aggressive attitude and tried to attack the rim," Logwood said.

The Lobos produced a solid win despite seeing Hugh Greenwood, the team's second-leading scorer, held to four points on 1-of-10 shooting, including 1-of-7 from 3-point range. Greenwood, though, chipped in eight rebounds and six assists. Deshawn Delaney (14.4 ppg) was limited to only three points.

Daniel Bejarano had 13 points and 11 rebounds to pace Colorado State. John Gillon contributed 10 points for the Rams, who were limited to 32.7 percent shooting.

"We've been playing a lot of close games, but we just broke down in areas that we couldn't afford," Bejarano said.

The Lobos finished the first half on a 10-1 run to grab a 35-26 lead. Williams knocked down a step-back 3-ball at the horn.

An 11-2 spurt opened a 55-37 cushion with 9:12 remaining. Tim Jacobs hit a layup to cap the rally.

The Rams then never closed the deficit into single digits.

New Mexico is 6-0 against teams coached by Larry Eustachy, which includes a 5-0 mark during his tenure at Colorado State ... New Mexico is 15-8 against ranked opponents with Craig Neal on the sidelines (2007 to present) ... Neal said he would apply for a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA for his son, Cullen, due to a right ankle injury. Cullen was leading the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg through his first three games.
