Gonzaga rolls over Santa Clara

Jan 11, 2015 - 6:36 AM Spokane, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Przemek Karnowski scored 18 points to lead No. 6 Gonzaga to a wire-to-wire 79-57 win over Santa Clara on Saturday.

Four Bulldogs (16-1, 5-0 WCC) joined Karnowski in double figures. Kyle Wiltjer added 16, Kevin Pangos chipped in 13, and Byron Wesley and Domantas Sabonis each had 11.

Gonzaga used its superior size to dominate down low, owning a 41-26 rebounding edge and 44-14 advantage in points in the paint.

"They weren't doubling at all, so our bigs had all the time in the world to get high-percentage shots," Pangos said.

The Broncos (7-10, 2-4) were led by Matt Hubbard with 15 points. Jared Brownridge contributed 14. Hubbard was 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.

Brownridge's triple at the 12:37 mark of the first half started a run of seven made shots out of eight attempts for Santa Clara. Nate Kratch's layup cut Gonzaga's early lead to one point, 30-29, but the Bulldogs padded their lead before the break.

Gonzaga outscored Santa Clara 14-2 in the final 5 1/2 minutes of the half. The Broncos made just one of their last nine attempts from the field and went to the locker room trailing 44-31, not having scored since the 3:11 mark.

Denzel Johnson and Hubbard hit triples on back-to-back possessions to trim Santa Clara's deficit to 13 points with 11 1/2 minutes to go, but the Bulldogs responded with a 10-0 run to create more breathing room. A Wiltjer 3 started the run, and Sabonis scored four points.

After Santa Clara's 3s, the Broncos made just two of their final 13 shots from the floor as Gonzaga was able to maintain its comfortable lead.
