Georgetown holds Creighton to 40 points
Feb 1, 2015 - 1:45 AM Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Jabril Trawick nearly outscored Creighton by themselves, combining for 39 points as No. 21 Georgetown cruised to a 67-40 victory over the cold-shooting Bluejays.Smith-Rivera totaled 24 points, Trawick added 15 and the Hoyas (15-6, 7-3 Big East) emphatically rebounded from Tuesday's home loss to Xavier with a stout defensive showing.
Creighton (10-13, 1-9) followed up its first Big East win with its worst shooting performance of the season. The Bluejays shot an embarrassing 21 percent (11-for-53) from the floor and did not have a single player score in double figures. Avery Dingman led the way with eight points.
Even so, the Hoyas remained cautious.
"They were struggling to score, but they can score," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said, emphasizing the word "can."
"They can go on runs, particularly in this building. They have very good offensive players, so there was no discussion of going for the jugular. It was like just keep doing what we're dong, stay focused, stay attentive and let's try to not let them get open."
Georgetown scored the game's first nine points, only to have Creighton respond with a 13-0 run to jump in front 15-12 on a Devin Brooks layup midway through the opening half.
From there, the Bluejays missed a staggering 23 shots in a row -- 12 straight before halftime and 11 after. They also split three trips to the foul line during the 18-minute stretch.
"It was a battle of toughness," said Creighton coach Greg McDermott, "and we certainly weren't up to the challenge."
Smith-Rivera's 3-pointer highlighted Georgetown's 16-2 run to end the first half, and the junior guard made another during a 10-0 run at the start of the second. His jumper with under 16 minutes left yielded a 38-17 cushion, and the closest it got from there was 17.
Game Notes
Georgetown made 50 percent (26-of-52) of its shots ... Georgetown's Mikael Hopkins finished with eight points and eight rebounds ... The Hoyas had a 26-12 advantage in the paint ... Creighton's previous season-low point total was 50 against Villanova last week.
