Oklahoma State upends No. 8 Kansas
Feb 8, 2015 - 1:58 AM Stillwater, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Le'Bryan Nash totaled 18 points and Anthony Hickey added 15 as Oklahoma State took down No. 8 Kansas, 67-62, at Gallagher-Iba Arena.Phil Forte contributed 13 points and Jeff Newberry chipped in 10 for the Cowboys (16-7, 6-5 Big 12), who were coming off a two-point, overtime win against No. 25 Texas on Wednesday.
"It was a great week. We got a good win against a good Texas team that lifted our spirit because we needed a road win," Nash said. "When we play against Kansas, we're always ready to play them. We want to protect our home court. We had our crowd behind us and it got rowdy."
Wayne Selden Jr. poured in 15 points for the Jayhawks (19-4, 8-2), while Frank Mason III, Perry Ellis and Brannen Greene each had 10 in the setback, Kansas' first since a five-point loss at Iowa State on Jan. 17.
Oklahoma State trailed by 12 early in the second half, but fought back and eventually assumed a 51-49 lead with 11:06 to go on a Forte layup. The Cowboys eventually stretched their advantage to 59-52 with 7:28 to play as Nash converted a layup.
Kansas pulled within two on two occasions. Selden was good from long distance to get the Jayhawks to within 61-59 inside of five minutes to go, but Nash countered with two from the line. Jamari Traylor hit a jumper on the next trip down the floor before Hickey responded on a layup inside of three minutes left immediately after both sides traded turnovers.
The visitors missed their last six field goals from that point, and Hickey provided the final score on his bucket with 20 seconds to go.
"We weren't guarding the ball screens right, we weren't getting out there and that really hurt us. They started driving the lane and getting buckets," Perry noted.
A 14-4 run by the Jayhawks turned a tie game into a 23-13 edge after back-to- back triples from Mason and Greene capped the surge.
Traylor's lay-in gave Kansas its largest margin of the contest at 30-16, and though Oklahoma State pulled as close as 36-30 on a Newberry steal and basket, it was 41-30 at the break.
Game Notes
