No. 25 SMU blows past UConn

Feb 15, 2015 - 6:29 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Yanick Moreira had 13 points and 10 rebounds and No. 25 SMU cruised to a 73-55 win over Connecticut on Saturday night.

Sterling Brown and Markus Kennedy also had 13 points each for SMU (21-5, 12-2 American Athletic Conference) and Nic Moore scored 10.

Ryan Boatright scored 10 of his 19 points in the second half but the Huskies (14-10, 7-5) had a three-game winning streak snapped. Daniel Hamilton added 13 points in the loss.

SMU led by as much as 28 points in the second half and improved to 19-2 in its last 21 games, with both losses coming to Cincinnati.

A 64-54 loss to the Bearcats on Feb. 5 snapped SMU's 11-game winning streak at Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs got back on track against the reigning national champions, taking the lead for good with a 12-0 run early in the first half. Brown scored five consecutive points during the flurry, which gave SMU a 15-10 advantage.

The lead reached double digits on Kennedy's free throws with 6 1/2 minutes left in the first half and was 41-26 at the break.

"I think if you consider the opponent, that's the best first half we've had," said SMU coach Larry Brown.

Moreira, Brown and Ryan Manuel scored four points each during a 22-4 run in the second half that was punctuated by Moore's 3 for a 67-39 lead with six minutes left. UConn was never closer than 16 after that.

Game Notes

SMU is 4-0 all-time against Connecticut, including a two-game season sweep last season. The teams will meet again March 1 in Hartford, Connecticut ... SMU hosts Temple next Thursday ... UConn is on the road against Memphis on Thursday.
