NC State bests slumping UNC in Chapel Hill

Feb 25, 2015 - 5:07 AM Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony "Cat" Barber tallied 15 points, four rebounds and four assists and NC State won its first game in Chapel Hill in 12 years, upsetting 15th-ranked North Carolina 58-46 on Tuesday.

Trevor Lacey and Ralston Turner added 14 points apiece for the Wolfpack, who knocked off their rival on the road for the first time since Feb. 25, 2003.

"I don't know how many times in my memory, how many times I've seen North Carolina get 46 points in this building," said NC State coach Mark Gottfried. "I'm really proud of our guys."

NC State (17-11, 8-7 ACC) won the rebounding battle, 41-38, and held North Carolina to 3-for-12 from beyond the arc in its third straight win overall.

The Tar Heels are in a free fall, with a pair of road games against Miami and Georgia Tech remaining before finishing the regular season back at home against No. 4 Duke.

They have dropped five of their last seven games, with four of those losses coming by double figures.

Kennedy Meeks led UNC (19-9, 9-6) with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Justin Jackson netted a game-high 16 points.

UNC's only lead of the game came on Brice Johnson's jumper to open the score. The Wolfpack scored the next four points, and they never looked back.

Lacey hit three free throws at 6:30 of the first half to make it 21-12. His 3- pointer sent NC State into halftime with a 29-18 lead.

"I thought Cat dominated the game early, and Trevor and Ralston did a great job," said UNC coach Roy Williams.

Five quick points out of the break had NC State thinking blowout, but the Tar Heels flipped the script over the next seven minutes. Meeks' jumper at 11:04 capped an 18-4 run and had the hosts back within two.

But NC State withstood the flurry. Turner scored five straight to push the spread back to seven. Despite going 1-for-2 on three of their last four trips to the foul line, the Wolfpack got enough stops down the stretch to hold on.

UNC had won 11 straight matchups at home ... Meeks and Johnson each blocked three shots for UNC.
